This is a video that I made last night in my quest to learn After Effects.
It's pretty exciting. The soundtrack is Tiesto & Marcel Wood's "Don't Ditch".

Branding My Brother
My brother is an aspiring DJ, and he has been poking at me for awhile now to give him a logo. His DJ name is DJ Amor, because his name is Aaron Morris. Amor also means love in Spanish, and I am assuming it express's how much he loves music. I have been working long and hard over the past couple of days to develop his identity, and here are some options that I came up with.

The color palette is derived from stage lighting, and the overlapping circles also allude to the light shades that can be switched out. The circular shapes are evocative of a DJ round table. Overlapping them also give's the shapes a sense of movement and vibration.
I chose Gotham rounded as the typeface, because I feel that it fits Aaron's personality the best. I thought to myself "He is definitely not a 90 degree angle, he is very much a rounded corner". He is dynamic and smooth with his music choices in relationship to what his audience may be. He is calm, cool, and collected just like Gotham rounded. :)
So far the process has been fun, because it's an awesome subject matter and he's family. I could most definitely see this becoming a portfolio piece as well, so I have even more motivation to do it.

Koch's Motel
I was asked to paint this image of an old motel sign for a friend of mine. This sign exists on an old motel in Sabetha, Kansas. It was exciting to paint, and it was good for me to get my hands dirty. I used acrylic paint, and watercolor pencil. I tried to give it a nostalgic but fresh personality. I do apologize for the image quality, it was shot with my Iphone :)

Streamline Typeface
Design Sponge is having a typeface (or "alphabet") competition, and I decided to take some free time to develop a hand drawn typeface. It encompasses a lot of the attributes of typefaces that I like, combined together with a few of my own ornamental touches. This was a lot of fun, and hopefully I can make some more!

McDonalds Smoothie Mixer
So, not only is Mcdonalds thinking differently about billboards with their digital clocks, and die cut smoothies. They also have an interactive smoothie mixer on-line. I really don't get the relevance of it, but its fun to play with. Have a try!

Aviation Logo
I have been working on designing a logo for a good friends aviation company. They fix airplanes (how cool is that!?) Anyways... I have really tried to put a vintage spin on this one. I have working mostly in black and white, and focusing on form. I want the tone of the logo to be fun, compassionate, and inviting not to mention trustworthy. I would think that you would want to trust the person fixing your airplane. here are a few works in progress.

Interning At Barkley
We'll I must say interning at Barkley has been quite amazing. I have met so many wonderful people, and I have been able to do so many awesome projects. One in particular really struck me, and that was our intern cause project. Water for Kiwanja is a non-profit organization located here in the heart of KC. I have been working closely with their team to come up with some design strategies to help them reach their goal. They are looking to drill a borehole in the village of Kiwanja, Tanzania so that the community can have access to clean water. They need $70,000 in order to do it.
I worked on this project with another intern who's name is Lauren Schimming. She is going to be a junior at KU this year, and we will be planning on staying in contact. I am looking forward to staying with Water For Kiwanja as their head of creative. I am extremely excited to keep with this project, and I am also excited to support a local non-profit organization. It is amazing to see how design can affect others, and compel them to get involved in such a good cause.

Mo & Barkley Blacktop

I am pretty excited for this summer, because I will be doing a mentorship with Barkley Blacktop. I want to just thank all of my teachers for really pushing me in studio. I also truly believe that portfolio day prepared me for a lot as well. I had some really awesome resources for interviewing, and I had received great advice on how to construct my portfolio. Simple snippets of advice, like letting the interviewer have your portfolio so that they can flip through it is extremely helpful in my opinion. I also think that developing our own identity in class was extremely helpful. Thanks everyone!!

Workshop: Frank Oviedo & Liquid Nine
Today's workshop was all about funneling what we want our design education to turn into, once we move on from school. We discussed who we want to work with, what sorts of things we would like to work on, and how that related to reality. We talked about ideas related to perspective, structure, market place, financial, and creative. All of these attributes were something that Frank stressed when it came to branding a new client. We have to put ourselves into perspective before we know how to brand another client. I did stress that I was very interested in image-making/illustration and merging that skill in with graphic design. It was interesting and informative. Here are some visuals that came from my inspirational research.

Create A Moment
So I thought I would share this. I recently applied for the internship at Barkley and this was the idea brief that I sent them. The task was to create a campaign for an important cause. For creatives our job was to give the system legs and make it work across other landscapes.
I created a campaign called create a moment.

Oh...Tiny Towns
So I was perusing through some photographs that I had taken on my spring break trip with my family last year. I stumbled onto this one, and realized that I really liked it. We had stopped at this little gas station in the middle of no where. I felt like time had stopped in this tiny town, but there was something humbling about it. I thought I would share it, because there is something special about it.
